My binding work slowed down over the winter of 2002 - 2003. A lot of that was due to Seasonal Affective Disorder, but some of it was down to the additional complexity of the binds I'm doing now. Every step I add to the process (such as hand-sewing headbands rather than gluing on pre-made ones) means that each book takes longer. I do believe that the payoff, in terms of the beauty of the books themselves, is worth the effort.

Another aspect that's slowing my binding down is the amount of non-binding bookbinding time I spend. I started tooling my bindings last year. This led to the discovery that I need to practice tooling on something other than the books I've worked so hard on. So I'm spending a lot of time tooling scraps of leather on spine jigs or flat bits of card. Also, as the volume of my tools and supplies have grown, the amount of time I spend on sharpening, maintaining and organising them has grown as well. And, last but not least, all the time I spend on the Bookweb is time I'm not binding. I don't resent all this non-binding time, but it does slow me down.
